You see it crossing your yard at night and think “giant rat.” You’re
actually looking at one of the most useful — and most misunderstood —
animals in North America. 🐀

Meet the Virginia opossum.

🦘 IT’S NOT A RODENT
It’s a marsupial — the only one found north of Mexico. Its closest
relatives are kangaroos and koalas, not rats. Mothers carry their tiny
babies in a pouch, then on their backs.

🧹 IT’S YOUR NIGHT CLEANUP CREW
Slugs, snails, beetles, cockroaches, mice, rats, fallen rotting fruit,
even roadside carrion. Opossums quietly clean up the pests and mess
around your yard while you sleep — and never send a bill.

🐍 IT SHRUGS OFF SNAKE VENOM
Opossums carry a natural protein in their blood that neutralizes many
snake venoms. Copperheads and rattlesnakes barely faze them.
Scientists are studying it for antivenom research.

🌡️ RABIES IS EXTREMELY RARE IN THEM
Their body temperature runs too low for the virus to thrive easily.
They’re one of the least likely mammals you’ll ever meet to carry it.

😵 AND THAT FAMOUS “PLAYING DEAD”?
It isn’t an act — it’s completely involuntary. When an opossum is
truly terrified, it faints, sometimes for hours, and can’t control it.
That’s its entire defense strategy: pass out and hope for the best.

Even the hissing and open-mouth display — showing off all 50 teeth,
more than any other North American land mammal — is pure bluff.
They’re not aggressive. They just want to be left alone.

😢 ONE THING THAT MIGHT SURPRISE YOU
Opossums live only about 2 to 4 years. That grizzled, old-looking
creature in your yard is probably barely two, living a short life
quietly cleaning up after everyone.

⚠️ AND ONE HONEST NOTE
You’ve probably seen the claim that opossums eat 5,000 ticks a season.
That number came from a single lab study, and later research on wild
opossums found few or no ticks in their diet — so take it with
caution. They do groom ticks off themselves, but the “tick vacuum”
reputation is likely overstated. The good news? They don’t need it.
Everything else on this list is real.

So the next time one waddles across your yard at night, let it pass.
It’s not a threat. It’s a short-lived, gentle, slightly awkward
neighbor doing the cleanup nobody else wants.
