The Unassuming Miracle Plant: Aloe Vera’s Rival

An unassuming green plant that has gained popularity, especially in recent times.

It’s no surprise that the plant, commonly known as the sneezeweed, is incredibly beneficial to have in your home. It refreshes the air, aids respiratory health, and repels flies and mosquitoes. Its penetrating scent has a relaxing effect and is a soothing balm for a tired and stressed mind.

A neighbor gave it to me years ago – I left a few cuttings to root in water, and they rooted beautifully. Now I have it in every room and give it away to the whole family. So, you don’t need to buy a new plant; ask around if someone in your vicinity has it. All you need are a few cuttings, and you’ll have new plants.

Cuban Oregano

The plant has several names: Cuban Oregano, Mexican Eucalyptus, or the Czech term “rýmovník,” which translates to the aforementioned sneezeweed. You can use the fresh plant by crushing its leaves in your hand and inhaling its aroma. It helps clear a stuffy nose and works similarly to nasal sprays. Overall, it has a positive effect on opening up the airways and continues to do so even when placed freely in a room. In small quantities, it releases essential oils into the air, making it much easier to breathe in the room where the plant is located.

Natural Insect Repellent

Although your respiratory system loves it, mosquitoes, moths, and insects stay away from it. Similar to mint, this plant has a strong repellent effect. This will come in handy throughout the year.

Make Tea from It

Pick a few leaves, pour hot water over them, and let them steep for a while. One leaf is enough for one cup. This infusion will bring you relief from a cold, but it will also help with coughs and sore throats. It can even alleviate headaches. Consuming it can also help with high blood pressure, asthma, or digestive problems. But its benefits don’t end there. For minor skin injuries, skin infections, or mild burns, let it steep and apply it to the affected area. It also has a positive effect on treating rheumatism and shingles, or bruises will heal faster with its help.

Harness Its Healing Power with Syrup

Prepare healing syrup from sneezeweed as follows:

Ingredients:

  • A sealable glass container
  • At least 50 larger sneezeweed leaves – the more, the better
  • Granulated sugar (depending on the size of the jar and the number of leaves, about 759 g to 1 kg)
  • Lemon, lime, orange – to taste
  • Lemon juice

Instructions:

  1. Gently rinse the leaves in cold water and cut them in half to release as much juice as possible.
  2. Thoroughly wash the lemon, lime, or orange (depending on your preference) with the peel and cut it into slices.
  3. Layer the leaves, sugar, lemon juice, and citrus fruits alternately in a clean jar until it is full.
  4. Seal and leave it by the window.

Over the course of a few weeks, you should observe the sugar dissolving. If needed, you can gently mix and press it down again. Regularly check the contents of the jar and ensure that no mold forms on the surface. Once the contents of the jar are completely liquid, strain through a cloth and squeeze well. Store in the pantry. The syrup does not irritate the stomach, helps clear the sinuses, and is incredibly effective for sore throats, bronchitis, and other fall and winter ailments. I take a spoonful 3 times a day. I also add it to tea, yogurt, and oatmeal. Kids love it! 🙂

This unassuming plant offers a wealth of health benefits and can be a powerful ally in maintaining your well-being. Incorporate it into your daily routine to enjoy its numerous advantages. 🌿
